Rough Start to our Memorial Day Weekend Gardening

We didn’t get as much accomplished as I had hoped on Saturday. Ever have one of those days when things just don’t go as smoothly as planned? Well, Saturday was one of those for us.

We ventured out into the holiday weekend crowds to pick up a few things we needed. Memorial Day Weekend is the start of the tourist season here in Maine. We are located both near the coast and in a lakes region, therefore subject to a lot of traffic as people are traveling to their summer homes, camps, and cottages. In addition, Memorial Day Weekend is the “safe planting” time in our area, so there were a lot of people out shopping. We couldn’t find everything in one place either, so we had to jump around from one busy garden center to another searching for the items on our list. We were unable to find the right sized pond baskets for the Self Watering Containers (SWC) or nylon trellis netting for the Square Foot Gardens (SFG). After coming up with an alternate plan, we headed for home.

Finally, we were able to start on some of our gardening projects. One project was erecting two trellises in the traditional garden for the pole beans. We used 4 metal poles that we had on hand, sunk them about 1 foot in the ground, and secured them in cement. A bit overkill for pole beans, I know….but like I said, we had them on hand.

While we were working on the two trellises, our yellow lab, Bradie got into the fenced in area around the garden and just went hog wild. She was so excited to be inside the fence with us that she ran around like crazy. Luckily nothing was planted yet. But the results were many paw punctures in the solar mulch that we carefully laid last week. Boy I was upset with her. She is such a dork. All I can say is it is a good thing we love her.
