Oh my-I moved from 4a to 4b. That could be good or bad, depending how I look at it. Maybe I'll get the Hearts of Gold canteloupe to ripen this year. Or maybe I'll need an air conditioner? I don't like THAT thought! Guess I'll drag out the High Country Gardens and check out that Agastache that I liked so much, but wasn't zoned for. I might be able to get it! Have a great weekend!
It is amazingly obvious how much the climate has changed even in our lifetime. I remember winters as a child with so much more winter weather. We didn't have air conditioning growing up, but I will admit that I now like our air conditioners during hot summer spells.
I think a lot of us are borderline...something in more ways than one. LOL! So much depends on your area as there are other factors that have an affect on your micro-climate.
I went from 7b to 8a. I've never gardened outside of zone 7... it's like I instantly picked up and moved. This could explain how I've had veggies all winter without much protection. Not sure how well the raspberries I just ordered are going to like zone 8a, but maybe this means I can try some citrus!
Still zone 8b (15 - 20 degrees) which is indeed our lowest temps we have ever experienced in this location. And it never lasts for long before we bounce back up above freezing.
Our zone has also change a bit. It has been 10 degrees warmer this month than last year. I have butter cups fixing to bloom. It was the second week of Feb. last year. Still Feb. is cold for us (at least in the past). I use to say it was a month off. Sure feels like March right now. It's Jan. 27th. It was 60+ today. Normal is 49.
I don't know about you, but I'm a bit skeptical of that 5b zone. The minimum temperature in zone 5b is supposed to be -15F, but I've already had three mornings this winter when the thermometer on my deck read -20 (the zone 5a minimum temperature).

DeleteSo you've gained half a zone ! Good for you. (Global warming isn't 'all' bad). Not that plant centers take the A's and B's into consideration, mind.
ReplyDeleteCanada should follow soon. The latest gov hardiness map dates from 2000. Judging by weather patterns of late, I'm sure I've gone up a notch too.
Yeah, there really isn't much difference between A and B. I am sure Canada will also need to adjust their map.
DeleteI am still 6b although 7a is only a couple of miles from here. So maybe I am borderline...something!

DeleteNorthern Idaho just got warmer...I caught up to Robin, we moved up one whole zone to 6b.:)
ReplyDeleteWow! A whole zone difference?! Crazy.

ReplyDeleteI think we as gardeners have been testing the boundaries of the zones for quite some time.
DeleteLooks like I am in 8a, but in reality I think I am in 8b. I can't ever remember in my lifetime it getting to 10 to 15 degrees.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of other factors that can affect micro climates of our gardens, so maybe you haven't changed after all.

ReplyDeleteThe zone change is interesting, but won't make too much of an impact on how our gardens grow. We've been adjusting to the changes all along.
DeleteHa! Mine has moved from 7B to 8A now...
ReplyDeleteNow we will all have to change our blogs to reflect the new zones. Other than that, I don't think I'll be doing anything different.
DeleteJust found out about this, frightening proof of climate weirdness. Soon we'll be growing avocados and bananas here in Maine....
ReplyDeleteHopefully not in our lifetime :)
