Garlic Harvest

The garlic was harvested this week. Perfect timing as I have just run out. I was pleased to see that the bulbs are slightly larger than last year. Two bulbs were trimmed and left on the kitchen counter. The rest were hung in the basement to cure.

I have grown garlic in one of the 4x4 square foot gardens for several years. This produces just enough garlic for a year.

  1. Beautiful! I harvested my garlic two weeks ago. I was checking on them last night to see if they have dried down enough and cured sufficiently to remove the tops and do the final weighing. I think they are just about there, but am giving them one more day (Saturday) and will do that on Sunday. I had a much better harvest this year than last too. I attribute it entirely to the weather. Last year was a record setting cold summer for us and this year is still cool but much closer to normal. Huge difference in all the harvests.

    1. I think it was the weather that also attributed to the larger garlic for me too. It was much warmer earlier this year. I usually cure the garlic in the shed, but it has been so humid that I am afraid it will be too damp. We are running a dehumidifier in the basement this year, so it is nice and dry.

    1. Thanks. Everything is so early this year and I was worried that I let it go too far, but the bulbs were all still intact.

  3. Your garlic harvest looks great! My heads were much smaller this year then in the past. I'm sure it was due to our weather.

    1. I usually let the garlic do its thing, but this time I made an extra effort to fertilize several times this season and keep up with watering. I think a combination of that and the extra heat helped.

  4. In the past I'd always done a 4x4 section too. But last year some were unusable from rot. So this year I planted more. Of course these were all fine. I'm sure my neighbors will love the extras though.

    1. Extra garlic is always good. I can't imagine any going to waste even in this household.

  5. Jealousy, jealousy. I had small bulbs this year. I think it may have been our very dry winter/spring
